Colombian hydrangeas for Japan, Korea and Asia

long-haul cold chain, from the Andes to Asia

San Isidro Hydrangeas Farming · La Ceja, Antioquia, Colombia · since 1997

Asian buyers already know Colombian flowers: in South Korea, hydrangeas are among the most popular Colombian varieties together with roses and carnations, according to Colombia's flower exporters' association. San Isidro grows hydrangeas in La Ceja, Antioquia, and ships them to importers and florists in Asia who need large heads, exact colors and supply all year.

How a long-haul shipment works

  1. Packed for distance. Stems are cut and hydrated in the morning, graded, packed one grade and color per box, and pre-cooled before leaving the farm.
  2. Air freight with a connection. Flights to Asia usually connect through a hub in the United States, Europe or the Middle East. Your forwarder chooses the routing; we coordinate cut and packing dates with the flight.
  3. Phytosanitary certificate and inspection. Japan, South Korea and other Asian markets inspect imported plants on arrival and generally require a phytosanitary certificate from the exporting country; ours is issued by ICA (see Japan's Plant Protection Station).
  4. Rehydration on arrival. Hydrangeas drink through stems and petals: a fresh cut and a 30–45 minute full soak revive a tired head.
Requirements, duties and accepted treatments differ by country and change over time. Your importer or customs agent confirms them before the first shipment.

Why a highland farm matters for long routes

At 2,200 m, cool nights make hydrangea stems woody and heads dense. A woody stem holds water better on a long flight and stands upright under a heavy head on arrival. That is the quality insurance for a route with a connection.
